Historic Wedding Venues in Minnesota That Will Make You Go Weak In the Knees

Resources, Weddings

Something tells me you’re secretly dying for a wedding that feels low-key enchanting. (I mean, what girlie with a soft spot for storybook vibes doesn’t?)

What if I told you that one simple step—booking a historic wedding venue—can set your dream in motion, giving you that swoon-worthy backdrop before you even send a single invite?

Of course, there are a million tiny things that go into planning (and pulling off) an heirloom occasion. But without the stunning venue that makes your heart skip a beat just thinking about yourself saying ‘to have and to hold’ there, you’re basically building your dream wedding on a pile of Pinterest pins

So, naturally, because I’m a nostalgia enthusiast that doubles as a vintage wedding photographer, I’m going to hand you a list of my favorite historic wedding venues in the Twin Cities… on a metaphorical (or very real, if we’re talking about thrifting your wedding decor) silver platter.

But first—because I care and because everything I do is for the girlies (and their guys!)—I’m going to tell you why booking a historic wedding venue isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s an actual, non-negotiable must.

Architecture in a Historic Wedding Venue Influences Body Language

There’s just something about a space with arches and crown molding that makes your body behave like you’re the main character in a fairytale. Step into a historic wedding venue, and you’re no longer walking; you’re gliding. You’re not just standing; you’re basically auditioning to be the next Princess of Genovia.

It might sound out of pocket, but take a look. The photos speak for themselves.

Brides stand a little taller and move more gracefully, soft morning light pouring through the arched windows catches each and every curl. Grooms all of a sudden become wildly heroic, steadying their soon-to-be wife up the marble steps and holding her train down narrow spiral staircases. (Apparently chivalry is architectural. Who knew?!)

Long hallways with coffered ceilings? Instant slow-motion and cutie conversations.

Tight corners tucked behind columns or around fireplaces become places for pure magic? Prime real estate for sneaking a kiss or two.

(Oh, but I’m not done yet…)

Exposed brick walls and brass sconces catch the light in just the right way, highlighting your curves and cheekbones. Stained glass windows filter sunlight into streams of color that makes a princess-esque twirl basically mandatory.

All of this to say, the right historic wedding venue does so much more than photograph beautifully. It choreographs your body and turns ordinary moments into cinematic, storybook romance.

A Mansion Wedding Venue Totally Changes How I Shoot

Listen, my eyes are always peeled for the classic, au naturale moments that will live in your family album for decades, no matter where you say ‘I do.’

But drop me in a mansion wedding venue, and you can bet my entire closet of thrifted goods (that’s how you know stakes are high) that my creativity is coming unhinged.

I’m no longer just framing a simple bridal portrait against a blank slate venue. I’m climbing stairs, ducking under arches, shifting around columns—because every angle is a new story, and every story deserves a good frame.

I move a little slower, lingering just long enough for the light to find its way through an arched window, or for the shadows to hit the banister just right.

Historic venues force me to move and see differently, all while you move through your day like you’re characters in a storybook.

Four Historic Wedding Venues in Minnesota That I’d Move Into Tomorrow If I Could

You’ve been warned: historic wedding venues are basically the cheat code for full-fledged romance. So now, fellow lover of all things vintage-y, I’m going to show you four of the most storybook-ready spaces in Minnesota to hold your heirloom occasion.

(Hold my cardamom and maple latte.)

Edward Anne Estate

Edward Anne Estate is actually unmatched when it comes to serving looks.

Sprawling, sun-drenched gardens make you feel like you just stepped into a vintage postcard. Sweeping staircases practically demand that your new hubby’s hand finds its way to your low back (as it should). Light spills through tall windows, landing on the lace details of your dress that may as well have been made for you and for this venue. The mix of exposed brick, polished wood, and delicate molding makes even the most candid moment feel cinematic.

As a Minnesota photographer who has shot here more than a few times and considers it a personality trait at this point, I also have some insider intel:

1. The bridal suite isn’t a glorified closet with a mirror. It’s an actual bridal suite, with space to spread out, outlets exactly where you need them (bless), the whole nine yards. It’s a whole moment before the day even starts.

Bride smiles at bridesmaid while she gets her makeup done

    2. The variety is unreal. One second you’re in a romantic, book-lined library with the most gorgeous leather couch you’ve ever laid eyes on; the next you’re strolling past the tiered fountain. And just like that, your wedding photos aren’t a single setting, but a story unfolding in chapters.

    3. Also, because this place is huge, the two of you can disappear for a second to catch your breath (and a couple of just-married kisses) while your guests are on the other side of the estate, sipping their cocktails and admiring the cake.

In conclusion, show up, look stunning, get married. Edward Anne will take care of the rest.

    Van Dusen Mansion

If Edward Anne is soft, sun-drenched romance, Van Dusen Mansion is her moodier, more dramatic older sister who owns a velvet dress and knows how to make an entrance.

This mansion wedding venue is a little deeper, with dark wood, ornate detailing, and stained glass that casts rich, jewel-toned glows.

And then there’s the turret—just casually rising up in the background of your photos like you’re not…still in Minnesota? Every time I shoot here I’m like, “are we in a European novel right now or…?”

It has that effect on things.

Bride and groom lock eyes in stone archway of Van Dusen Mansion in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Bride sits on groom's lap while holding a bouquet of white roses
Bride leans against stone pillar at Van Dusen Mansion while gazing through her veil at the camera

The grand staircase delivers on the drama with slow descents, hands on banisters, and aerial views compliments of yours truly. But the real sleeper hit? The bridal suite.

Which, if you’re me (hi), means you’re taking full advantage of the porcelain sink and details are styled, layered, art-directed into their own little still-life moment on the edge. It’s giving editorial spread in the most obvious place, not “I took these on the floor.” (I could never.)

And then, step outside and you’ve got the courtyard, tucked away for peak intimacy. Whether you sneak off and take a breath or choose to have your ceremony here, it feels like a separate moment from the rest of the mansion wedding venue.

If you want your wedding to feel like a period drama, the Van Dusen does not miss.

    Semple Mansion

Semple Mansion is giving “royal couple in the middle of Minnesota.”

Dark walnut wood everywhere you look makes you feel warmer and cosier than you thought possible while dressed to the nines in vintage wedding wear.

Columns up front? Yes, please. They’ll make the two of you look straight up stately, like a coronation ball is scheduled right after the wedding ceremony.

And let’s talk about the thresholds. They’re basically made for first looks and portraits. Morning light (you know the kind) hits the molding on the steps of the mansion wedding venue, framing you in a way that feels equally editorial and eclectic.

Bride's father exclaims over bride's bouquet on mansion threshold
Bride walks down ornate walnut steps and is met with her father's look of sheer surprise during first look
Bride looks out of her sheer veil over the courtyard of Semple Mansion in Minnesota

Semple Mansion is an exercise in romantic moments framed by European architecture, with drama in every doorway and intimacy amplified by thoughtfulness. It’s cosy, it’s warm, and it’s absolutely going to make your wedding day look like the stuff of storybooks.

    The Commodore

The Commodore Restaurant and Bar in Saint Paul boasts a different kind of vintage. Whereas the others lean fairytale, The Commodore is giving Gatsby

Being that it’s a real-life speakeasy that hosted the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald himself back in the ‘happy days,’ this place has more character than it knows what to do with. Low lighting, curved lines, velvet textures, that can’t-put-your-finger-on-it feeling of a place that has seen a lot and remembers every last bit of it.

And selfishly, this is where I get to have a little (more) fun (than usual). Because the light is more elusive and moody here, we get to play with direct flash and with a different kind of intimacy. Hands finding each other on the edge of the bar. Friends folded into a booth, voices low even though there’s no reason to be quiet. Your head tipped back when you laugh— and suddenly it’s that photo.

Everything is happening within arm’s (or zoom’s) reach, and it’s like nothing exists outside of this room for the night.

As it should be, if you ask me.

So, Why Choose the Historic Wedding Venue?

Your wedding isn’t a checklist of pretty things you put together— it’s a lived story, a series of small, beautiful moments that make your cheeks hurt from smiling so much.

Your historic wedding venue is the choreographer of all of that. It moves you, then makes you pause and take it all in. It makes your grandma gasp and guests crane their neck to look at the details. It makes your high school friends whisper, “how is everything so…perfect?”

And, yes, it makes me, your photographer, feel like the luckiest girly alive.

So, pick the place that makes your chest flutter, your imagination run wild, and your wedding photos still hit in 20 years.

Years from now, when you’re flipping through those photos with your kids, your grandkids, or just each other over takeout on a Tuesday night: you won’t just see the day. You’ll feel it— the warmth of the sunlight spilling through the windows, the hush of the hallway you snuck down to squeal about being husband and wife, the way your person’s hand felt in yours on what was, quite possibly, the most pivotal day of your entire lives.

That’s the secret. That’s what makes a wedding a story worth telling over and over (and over) again.
